        The Concept of Ecostacking

        Techniques and Applications

by Jinjun Wang, Huai Liu, Ingeborg Menzler-Hokkanen, Hongbo Jiang, Heikki M.T. Hokkanen, Ingeborg Menzler-Hokkanen

Ecostacking is a new concept and approach which aims to maximize the benefits of ecosystem service providers in cropping systems to help achieve the goal of long-term sustainable agriculture and food production. The term "ecostacking" means combining synergistically the beneficial services of functional biodiversity from all levels and types. It is a comprehensive approach, where the various ecosystem service providers are fully integrated with the rest of the cropping system including agronomic practices. It is an approach which goes beyond conventional Integrated Pest Management practises, and attempts to take advantage of all the functional biodiversity of a system. The main focus of ecostacking is on maximizing ecosystem services for biological control and pollination from beneficial arthropods, but the approach also utilizes other invertebrates (e.g., earthworms) as well as beneficial vertebrates such as bats, birds and small mammals. Microbes also provide invaluable ecosystem services including pest, disease, and weed control, either directly as components of "suppressive soils" or as plant colonizers (as endophytes or as epiphytic microbial flora). The ecostacking approach also aims to maximize other nature-provided services such as maintenance of soil health and nutrient cycling. The Concept of Ecostacking is the first book in a series which introduces ecostacking concepts to the reader and explores how this approach can be used in a variety of ways and in different cropping systems. The book defines this new concept and shows, using illustrative case studies from around the world, how ecostacking principles can be successfully employed in cropping systems in the open field, in greenhouses and in forestry. This book: · will serve as inspiration for developing further applications of this breakthrough technology for sustainable agricultural production. · is a must-read for everyone with an interest in developing sustainable crop protection systems and ecosystem management. · has been written and edited by the world's leading experts in this new and exciting endeavour.

A Poem of Fire: Her Sword, Book 1

        by Huai Guan

A young antiques restorer falls in love with her colleague only to find out he is an ancient sword in human form. A myth-imbued fantasy in the vein of A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES.   Antiques restoration is a lonely job where one becomes accustomed to loneliness. Renee knows it all. After graduating from college, she moves to a big city and starts her first job as a restorer. She didn’t expect much of anything to ever change, but things prove the opposite when she meets her beautiful colleague Hsiao Liam. At the age of 27, Hsiao Liam appears far more sophisticated than his looks may suggest. He seems to care deeply for Renee while keeping her at a distance. In an elevator accident, Hsiao Liam saves Renee by flying a sword and exposes his secret: he is an ancient sword that has taken on the human form. To Hsiao Liam, Renee is the one he has been waiting for thousands of years. As they get closer however, a spell begins to cause conflicts between his human and sword sides. He loves her, but the sword’s consciousness is trying to puncture her heart.   Comparable to A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES and inspired by the culture of the Bronze Age, HER SWORD creates unique characters and in essence explores the conflicts between what we need and what we want. Huai Guan’s flawless prose style draws us smoothly but irrevocably into a world in which our reverence for the deep past finds a new, though tumultuous rebirth.   Sponsored by Taiwan Creative Content Agency, HER SWORD is currently under development into a TV series.

They built roofless houses in the caves and placed their ancestors’ coffins on the cliffs. Audrey's mission was to record this disappearing social form using her camera.   However, she soon realized that the dangerous terrain and faint light had made her skills all useless. With the passage of time and strong passion for completing the project, Audrey turned to the Internet for help and finally found Ivan Wen, who had professional experiences in cave photography. But Ivan was based in Chicago, struggling to start his business in jewelry design....

The Chinese Presentation in Everyday Life

        by Zhai Xuewei

Face and favor as a topic has been described by missionaries, observers, journalists who were in China, and also discussed by anthropologists, sociologists and psychologists many times. However, there is still a lack of proper understanding regarding the meaning of face and favor within the Chinese social network, political structure, regarding its culture pattern and value, the traits of face and favor, and what happens when they connect with each other or with power. The author has been engaged in the research of the guanxi law for many years. Since he published a series of research results, he sees the complicated phenomenon as the Chinese way of daily representation, and researches its implications and contexts from a new perspective and theory. This book also draws attention to the previous research results of cohesion and discussion, and tries to create a dialogue with the related theories, as far as possible in order to show the outline of the basic characteristics of Chinese behavior pattern and their track, which will help the readers to better understand research in other areas of Chinese behavioral studies by drawing upon the experience gained on key points.
