Ōgai Mori, wie sich Rintarō Mori (1862-1922) als Schriftsteller nannte, eine der im neuzeitlichen Japan nicht seltenen Doppelbegabungen, hatte neunzehnjährig als jüngster Arzt seines Landes die Universität verlassen, in Deutschland Hygieneforschung betrieben, war Chef des japanischen Heeressanitätswesens geworden, als Übersetzer von Goethe, Hauptmann, Hofmannsthal, Ibsen, Strindberg, Maeterlinck u. a. berühmt, als Novellist, Dramatiker und Essayist weithin bekannt, als er 1909 mit Vita sexualis öffentliches Ärgernis erregte.Die Nummer der Zeitschrift Subaru (Die Pleíaden), in der sein »der Moral abträglicher« Text erschienen war, wurde verboten. Nicht weniger scharf äußerten sich Anhänger der die japanische Literatur beherrschenden Naturalismustheorie: was Ōgai Mori als Erzählung ausgebe, sei nicht Schöne Literatur, sondern Wissenschaft.In der Tat hatte der Autor dem gängigen einen »geistigen« Naturalismus entgegensetzen wollen und in der Überzeugung, eine reine Fiktion könne die dem Gegenstand gebührende Wahrhaftigkeit nicht erbringen, seine eigene Entwicklung protokolliert. Die kühle, ironisch-distanzierte, auf Redlichkeit und Detailtreue bedachte, dennoch poetische Chronik gilt nun aufgrund eben dieser Eigenschaften als ein Klassiker der frühen japanischen Moderne.
