        El escapista

        by Javier Sebastián

Being one of the tallest men in the world brings with it certain inconveniences. However, it also has its advantages. Above all, if you are shot, need a replacement kidney and have a twin that can give you one. There is no more suitable donor. Another advantage: you can replace each other, as Carmelo, one of the two main characters of the novel, does when he begins to live the life of his brother, who he swaps to get him out of jail. What if Rafael had been making a living from organ trafficking? And from his side, Rafael will also start asking questions. What if Carmelo was the head of a terrorist group? A cruise full of disturbing revelations, a few days in Corsica, an escape. And the realization that their lives will never be what they were.

        Reconquista

        by Miquel Bulnes

Towards the end of the eleventh century, during an expedition to collect protection funds for the city of Seville for King Alfonso VI, the young Castilian cousins Eloy and Carmelo become separated. Carmelo comes under the care of an Islamic vizier in Seville, learns Arabic and serves in Seville’s army; Eloy is appointed infanzón in the province of Toledo, which has been conquered by Alfonso VI. Eventually, their paths will cross again when they face each other on the battlefield.   At the beginning of the twelfth century the Mozarab brother Pius was summoned from Toledo to a monastery of the order of Cluny to hear the confessions of a dying noble. While the noble endlessly stalls his actual confession, Pius gradually begins to understand what kind of place he has traveled to and why he was assigned this task.   Reconquista is a dazzling, all-encompassing novel in which Miquel Bulnes sublimely tells the fascinating story of the struggle between Mohammedans and Christians in Medieval Spain through a host of unforgettable characters.

      • La misura del tempo (The Measure of Time)

        by Gianrico Carofiglio

One spring afternoon lawyer Guido Guerrieri finds an unexpected fragment of the past in his office. Of course, Lorenza has changed a lot. When they first met, more than twenty years ago, she was a charismatic, ambitious and seductive girl who wanted to become a writer and seemed ready to take on the world. Things took different turn. The years have had an impact on her face, her body, her temper. As if that weren’t enough her son Jacopo, a small-time delinquent, was convicted of first-degree murder. During the trial, the alibi she offered for her son was discredited. So, in the new trial, she turns to Guerrieri as her last hope. Guido does not have a good memory of her, of the way she treated him, of how their relationship ended. Moreover he isn’t convinced of Jacopo’s innocence. However, perhaps to make a melancholy tribute to his lost youth, he decides to accept the case. And so he begins, almost unwillingly, an exciting journey into the depths of justice and its potentially lethal pitfalls. A surprising investigation back and forth across the dangerous border between truth and mere verisimilitude. His old friend Carmelo Tancredi, a retired police inspector, and charming investigator Annapaola Doria are once again by his side. Between surprising nights at the Osteria del Caffellatte and heart-to-heart talks with Mr. Sacco – the punching bag he works out with every evening – Guerrieri realizes that this time, in court, it will take more than just a brilliant defense. A masterful novel. Writing at once unrelenting and full of compassion, striking a balance between the trial story – the purest distillation of human experience – and the sad notes of time as it passes and exhausts itself. “If he wasn’t guilty of that murder, and I can’t imagine how, then it would be such a combination of unfortunate circumstances as to give you the chills.”

Soul Child On your knees! It is Christmas.

by P. Mauricio Uribe Duque, O.C.D.

by BARANDA LETURIO, Nieves; CRUZ, Anne J.

        Rewind

        by Juan Tallón

SHORTLISTED FOR IV PREMIO BIENAL DE NOVELA MARIO VARGAS LLOSA 2021 -   One Friday in May, on what is shaping up to be a perfect day, there is a strange explosion in a building in Lyon. One of the flats in the now ruined building was occupied by a group of students from various countries who were having a party. Paul, student of Fine Art; Emma, tormented by the tortuous history of her Spanish family; Luca, fascinated both with mathematics and with the cyclist, Marco Pantani; and Ilka, a student who left Berlin with nothing more than a guitar on her back: these are the tenants of a house that was a popular meeting place for the city’s students. In the neighbouring flat, also hit by the explosion, lives a quiet Moroccan family, whose members are apparently well-integrated into French life. The novel explores events from various points of view. Through five narrators – victims and witnesses – we discover what happened that Friday night and the consequences that unfolded over the next three years, until their accounts have covered every hidden aspect of the explosion.   Rewind explores whether it is possible to rewind events. And examines our personal ghosts, the role of chance, the people who in the end we do not become, the secrets that must or must not be told, and our capacity to remake ourselves when we are broken. This novel is an espionage operation that investigates the mechanisms of life. How it changes without warning, turns, throws you into the air and destroys you when you are least prepared for it. And, just as mysteriously, how – if you survive everything life has to throw at you – it then allows you to remake yourself and keep moving forward.
