Every story describes a wish that Tyler makes, the steps he takes to obtain it, and the reason why he gladly grants it to a dear one. In "Tyler's Promised Gift" Tyler works hard to obey his mother's commands in anticipation of receiving his promised 'little red car". At his birthday party he offers the car to a younger, sad, and crying guest. In "Tyler's Baby Sister" Tyler tries to get his mother to focus her attention again on him instead of on his baby sister, Tia. Tyler finally realizes that helping his mother to give more care to Tia gave him the most satisfaction. In "Tyler's Acting Practice" Tyler spends hours perfecting his aim when using a slingshot. When he was finally ready to play the part of David in the school play "David and Goliath", he noticed that his friend Joel, who was new to the school this year, was being bullied and excluded from all games because he was missing the net whenever he tried to shoot a basketball. Heroically, Tyler offers the role of David to Joel when he learns that Joel excels at aiming pebbles with his slingshot. His plan to reverse the students' disrespect towards Joel succeeded when everyone in the school auditorium cheered Joel for his perfect aim at the helmet of Goliath. In "Tyler's Lunchbox Treat", Tyler could hardly wait for lunch break to bite into the krispy marshmallow treat his mother had baked for him.  When Tyler discovers that the sandwich of his lunch companion was missing, and that he couldn't share his peanut butter sandwich with him because his companion was allergic to peanuts, Tyler gives him his krispy marshmallow square. Tyler always feels like a winner at the end, and not at all a loser. Children and parents are happy to arrive at the ending of each story.

        LIFE AFTER

My Journey from Starvation to Salvation

        by Ariana Aboulafia

Ariana Aboulafia was twenty-one years old when she was told by the physician that she had six weeks left to live, if she could not survive from the disturbing and mysterious symptoms, especially the devastating nausea and drastic weight. But three months earlier, Ariana just graduated from college, fond of hiking and gym, enjoying the energetic youth like the others and moved from Los Angeles to Miami to start law school. How did this happen?   In this compelling and reflecting memoir, Ariana chronicles her stories and struggle to find the right diagnosis and her fight against a rare disease that almost caused her to starve to death. Told in an accessible and engaging manner, it is not just a journey to get through what Ariana was suffering and experiences, to fully reveal a patient’s physical, psychological and emotional statuses that are hard to be recognized by around, but a compelling and inspiring story about the healing power derived from family, love, friendship and faith, as well as her reflection and meditation about the society, philosophy, religion, marriage, life and the national healthcare systems. This page-tuner manuscript is completed with approximately 93,000 words, and has a similar tone with the New York Times bestseller Paul Kalanithi’s “When Breath Becomes Air”.

THE LOONY BIN ON THE HILL

        by SUZANA TRATNIK

NOMINATED FOR THE KRESNIK AWARD IN 2019 (FOR THE BEST NOVEL IN SLOVENIA). THE LOONY HOUSE ON THE HILL (Norhaus na hribu) “Oh, believe me, this woman, who is still so young, did all this. She killed someone, disposed of the body and concealed it all.” This sentence in the introduction to the novel surprises us, but still does not prepare us for what follows. The main character, Ariana, whose mother disappeared when Ariana was still very little, lives in a tense, conflictive relationship with her aunt, in the remote village of Privežice. The place which, as noted by the merciless observer and commentator Ariana, appeared around the madhouse on the hill at the end of the paved road, where one of the inmates was her grandmother. What happens is not a typical love story or a typical story about getting to know oneself, although it talks precisely about this. What distinguishes this novel above all else is the lively, flowing dialogue, and the uncompromising, direct aesthetics (sometimes involving ugliness or at least uncouthness or lack of political correctness), which grabs us and takes us on a crazy adventure.

        Cybertlön

        by Luis Sagasti

Few Argentinian authors narrate in the interstice of speculative fiction and essay, between story and aesthetics. Luis Sagasti is a ferocious reader and demonstrates his sophisticated ear without resorting to solemnity or shouting, adept at finding the threads that secretly bind John Cage, the Beatles, Picasso, Ariana Harwicz, and César Aira. Cybertlön is a lucid essay about the state of contemporary art and the emergence of the cyberflâneur: a landlubber who surfs the web and reflects on the wreckage of his experience. But as a boy, Sagasti learned to travel much earlier, like so many of his generation, by browsing the massive and unpretentious I Know Everything encyclopedia from Larousse, a compendium of the world in 12 volumes, with no clear logic or order. From those first readings and his democratic and unbiased attention to the world, Sagasti builds his own Aleph.
