        Religiöse Entwicklungen im Islam

        Beobachtet in Marokko und Indonesien

by Clifford Geertz, Brigitte Luchesi, Bassam Tibi

        Red Line

by Samar Mahfouz BarrajIllustrated By: Mona Yakzan and Mira El-Myr

Mazen, a young boy, is one day surprised by their neighbor Bassam shouting with anger in the street “My parking spot is a red line!” Does this mean he plans to paint the street red, asks Mazen to his mother? The mother explains to Mazen that what Bassam means is simply that no one is to park in his place. The notion is still vague to Mazen: Why red? Does it have anything to do with red traffic lights? The mother tries again “When something is a red line, it means that it is off limits to others”. In this illustrated album, Samar Barraj boldly addresses the delicate issue of child sexual abuse. Acknowledging the complexity of the boundary it tackles, the book determines it through examples the mother and child raise in their conversation. Mazen’s spontaneous remarks and comments point out the difficulty of defining this red line, and make of the book a realistic example of such a conversation. The illustrations develop the notion further, by representing situations in which the red line might be crossed – one may be on his bicycle, at his computer, or approached by a respectable-looking old man in the street. The body parts are not named, but are represented in a naïve drawing Mazen made, though the text insists on the importance of preserving the body as a whole. The colorful images and constant presence of the mother and parents make of the book a reassuring experience despite the gravity of the topic.

        by Tibi, Bassam

Immigration to Germany has reached a new dimension since the opening of the border in September 2015. Muslim migrants from states in the process of dissolution are predominantly coming into society as "new Germans". As Bassam Tibi points out, the resulting extreme challenges with regard to successful integration are something quite different from displaying love for foreigners, combined with accommodation, alimony, and language courses. Integration requires above all the offer of an inclusive citizen identity of the host country and the acceptance of this offer by newcomers - this is the only way to create a sense of belonging and identification with the host society and its values. But at this essential point at the latest, German migration policy fails completely and with catastrophic consequences. Many Muslims living here have an acute identity problem - one of the main causes of religious radicalisation and rejection of the host society, including an openly hostile attitude towards it. Bassam Tibi, himself a Syrian migrant, analyses the situation in Germany and in the countries of origin sharply and without ideological blinkers - and emphatically warns of the dangers associated with the failure of the large-scale experiment on immigration that is currently taking place. In this updated and expanded new edition of his standard work, Tibi pays special attention to a phenomenon that has received far too little attention: the new anti-Semitism in Germany.

        by Tibi, Bassam

In the face of the challenge posed by the reception of hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Islamic world and the handling of current migration movements, the disturbed European self-image, the European identity crisis, is becoming more and more alarming. Which values, which citizen identity, which identification does Europe offer to refugees who not only have to cope with their material and human misery, but who at the same time bring a neo-absolutist worldview of pre-modern ethnic-religious character to Europe? Bassam Tibi diagnoses the supremacy of a narrative that no longer distinguishes between tolerance and self-denial for reasons of cultural relativism and relativism of values. He sets up a reflection on and an advocacy for what makes Europe civilizational: a European culture, which is based on reason and enlightenment and which derives from them, with an explicit universal claim, non-negotiable and individual human rights and freedoms, actively stands up for them - and at the same time defends them decisively against anti-democratic ideologies, which threaten democracy, freedom, and open society as such and acutely endanger them through their totalitarian claim. Bassam Tibi's captivating analysis, in which he introduced the concept of a leading European culture in 1998, is finally made accessible here in a new and updated form, extended by an introduction comprising over one hundred pages, which embeds his warnings in the current context of migration and the refugee crisis.

        Basler Unbequeme Gedanken

Über illegale Zuwanderung, Islamisierung und Unterdrückung der Redefreiheit

by Tibi, Bassam / Vorwort von Neff, Benedict

There are quite a few questions about which people will not voice their true views with regard to the consequences. Such consideration quickly takes on a life of its own as an inner censorship instance, which ultimately prevents not only the expression of uncomfortable thoughts, but also these thoughts themselves. Theodor W. Adorno in answer to the question: What is German? According to the diagnosis of the Syrian migrant Bassam Tibi, since the refugee crisis of 2015 at the latest, the warning of his teacher Adorno against internal censorship in Germany has become deplorable truth. Not so long ago, Bassam Tibi was almost omnipresent in German media - from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Welt to ZDF, for which he worked from 1990 to 2001 as an expert on Islam and the Middle East; now, with his critical analyses of the Islamic world and the current migration movements, he has become a regular author in Swiss newspapers, namely the Basler and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, for which he is currently writing. This volume brings together Tibi's analytically sharp, unvarnished analyses, published in the Basler Zeitung from July 2016 to August 2018, for the first time in unabridged form. The contributions are thematically grouped, with introductions, and are flanked by an introduction and a detailed interview with Bassam Tibi. Tibi takes a transnational look at what is happening in the Islamic world: the migration movements to Europe, the anti-Semitism that has migrated to Europe, the development of Islamic minorities, for example in India since Pakistan's  secession, the background to the Iran deal of 2015, and what is currently happening in Turkey and Syria.  Benedict Neff, political correspondent for Germany for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, contributes a very personal foreword. Was bedeutet Gender Mainstreaming?

        by Tibi, Bassam

In the political debate and in everyday European life, questions about Islam are more topical and urgent than ever. Although German Islamic Studies, including its subdivisions into Arabic Studies, Turkology, Iranian Studies, etc., enjoys increasing importance under the political influence of Islamic migration to Europe through the granting of immense third-party funds; it has been trapped since its beginnings in ideological perspectives from which it has not liberated itself to this day. German Islamic Studies was based on the stereotype of homo islamicus, a rigid cultural image of the other, the foreigner, who in the racist beginnings under Carl Heinrich Becker was marked as an inferior subhuman and in the present other extreme is regarded as exclusively positive and living in a so-called culture of ambiguity. Both perspectives, demonization and glorification of the supposed homo islamicus, are creations of German Islamic Studies, which have more to do with the German scientists than with their object of research and consequently contribute little to a real understanding of Islamic civilization. Such an effort requires not only a non-ideological approach, but also in particular an examination of Islamic history within the framework of a historical social science. Islamic research must be more than a discussion of theology and philology, and colonialist views of Muslims - whether negative or positive - are neither scientific nor meaningful. Tibi therefore demands nothing less than a paradigm shift in the confrontation with Islamic civilization: on the one hand a complete decolonization, on the other hand the methodical and content-wise application of historical-social-scientific and religion-critical analyses, which do not inadmissibly commit the other to his eternal otherness, but include change. Tibi's eye-opening analysis is more current than ever and sheds a completely different light on many of the events of the day. Thus, in a detailed concluding chapter, he also considers the current migration movements from the Islamic region in a world-historical context.
