The group of plants known as 'peppers' is diverse, containing types that contribute to the fresh and processed food markets as well as varieties that are used in pharmaceuticals and other non-food commercial products. Peppers originally developed in tropical regions, but are now grown and used in every country where it is possible to grow them, including in areas where production is difficult. This book examines peppers from historical, genetic, physiological and production perspectives, following the development of the cultivated crop from the wild type. Diverse examples of pod types and their variation in pungency are examined. Production methods, including the importance of fertilization and irrigation are discussed, as are constraints on production, including pests, pathogens and weeds. Harvesting methods and post-harvest challenges and opportunities are also explored.

There is no shortage of tapas books on the market but the claim by TAPAS for special recognition lies in its idiosyncratic treatment of this familiar subject. Author, Janet Mende,l takes a tapas tour of Spain, informs the reader how to enjoy tapas in the tascas and tabernas and then shows the reader how to translate that enjoyment to one's own kitchen. Taking 140 of her favourite kitchen-tested recipes, all based on traditional Spanish products, she gives absorbing insights into regional nuances, she composes tapa-party menus and even makes wine recommendations to accompany the tapas. A handy Spanish-English glossary is a thoughtful concluding touch. "I love tapas!" declares Mendel. For her this variety of tastes, enjoyed with wine and in the company of friends, constitues the "essence of life in Spain". This is both a cookbook and a guidebook and this essence or the "tapas way of life", as she calls it in the opening section of the book, permeates every page. The choice of dishes is comprehensive but labour-intensive ones like the celebrated callos â la madrileña are avoided. Rather the emphasis is on a modest standard of skill in the kitchen. The recipes are arranged in the way tapas are prepared and served - spread on toast, stuck on a cocktail stick, in a cold salad, hot off the griddle or in a cooked dish with sauce - rather than by food category ('eggs', 'seafood' or 'meat', etc.). Thus prawns, for example, could well appear in every single chapter. Should the reader be looking for a great way of cooking a particular food, be it prawns, artichokes, clams or sausage, recipes with that ingredient should be consulted in the index. Many tapas can be turned into starters or main dishes and pointers and recommendations in this regard are provided . Also, many sauces and dressings, such as alioli and romesco, are called for in different recipes throughout the book, so these have all been grouped together. Individual recipes provide the reader with a page reference. Finally measurements for ingredients are given in three standards (metric, British and American in that order) and where British and American terminology differs the British is given first and the American follows in parentheses, for example, aubergine (eggplant) and grill (broiler). So, an individual - and very pragmatic - approach, a sparkling collection of dishes, striking full-colour photos by award-winning photographer, Michelle Chaplow andimpeccable organisation of material contribute to give TAPAS a special claim to be at the forefront of tapas books as the tapas 'revolution' maintains its impressive global momentum. Author's Note: Janet Mendel, an American resident in southern Spain, has been writing about Spanish food for more than 30 years. Her earlier book, Cooking in Spain, also published by Ediciones Santana, is considered the world's most authoritative guide to Spanish cuisine. Global rights are also availble for this.

A Guide to Wild Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar is a unique book that brings together the history of exploration of the 'wild' country that is the Iberian Peninsular in the 19th Century. The authors retrace the footsteps taken by four British naturalists based in Gibraltar and Jerez: Abel Chapman, a vitner from Sunderland, among whose achievements was the saving from extinction of the Spanish ibex and large involvement in the establishment of Africa's first game reserve, now the Kruger National Park; Walter Buck, a native of Jerez who became British Vice-Consul in that city, and together with Chapman described the countryside, people and wildlife of Spain in two classic books Wild Spain (1893) and Unexplored Spain (1910); Leonard Howard Loyd Irby, an army officer and keen ornithologist who devoted his time to the study of birds in southern Iberia aftern his arrival in Gibraltar in 1868 and published his findings in his Ornithology of the Straits of Gibraltar (1875);and William Willoughby Cole Verner, also a military man, who was a keen naturalist and explorer and wrote in 1909 My Life among the Wild Birds in Spain on his retirement in Algeciras. Quoting liberally from the works of these intrepid naturalists and embellishing the book with their own exquisite photographs, the Finlayson family has produced an evocative image of a landmass so diverse that their predecessors, Chapman and Buck, recognised that "included within its boundaries are nearly all the physical conditions of Europe and northern Africa". The book is, however, not only a fascinating travelogue but also a plea for conservation as some of wild Iberia's treasures are now under serious threat. The grand Egyptian vulture,for example, the authors maintain, may well be extinct in Andalucía in a decade's time. Happily there is a counter-balance with the recovery of some species like the glossy ibis and the purple gallinule. A Guide to Wild Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar is a multi-facetted, cleverly conceived book that is directed at anyone who has an interest in the natural history of the three territories that make up the Iberian Peninisular. It tells the reader where to go to find unique species or natural phenomena like the migration of birds of prey. Author's Note: Clive Finlayson is a Gibraltar-born biologist and his work has included research into the ecology of birds and that of the Neanderthals. His wife, Geraldine, was also born in Gibraltar and is a biogeographer. She has worked on many field projects including inside the Doñana National Park. Their son, Stewart, is a keen naturalist and is reading for a PhD in biology. He is intimately familiar with the wildlife of Iberia and also heads the Gibraltar Museum Caving Unit.

Tampoco aspiran a explicaciones totalizantes; significan a través de momentos, fragmentos, detalles y relaciones inéditas. Lo visual toca lo real sin aspirar a verdades absolutas y cerradas, pero desde sus singularidades expresivas renueva la percepción y la comprensión del mundo. En ese contexto, consideramos que el trabajo de Beatriz González construye memoria, asumiendo que esta no se refiere a dar cuenta de hechos objetivos ocurridos en el pasado, sino como una construcción simbólica, un trabajo, una nueva dimensión de sentido vinculada a la creación artística. Diseases remain a serious problem in wheat and barley cultivation. It has been estimated that around 20% of global crop production is lost to diseases.
