Mayers kleines Buchregal
Hello and welcome to my presentation! I am Uwe Mayer, freelance Illustrator, author, designer and now also publisher of my children's picture book „DIE LAUFMASCHINE“, or in the English translation: “The Bicycling Baron". The book playfully tells the story of the invention of the bicycle from the very start. As a subject long overdue, it is original, based on fact and yet told in a humorous and original format with great illustrations throughout. DIE LAUFMASCHINE won the 1st prize from the State of Baden-Württemberg (Germany) for its original idea & concept in 2017. With further funding I was in the lucky position to not only create this important book project, but also publish it in 2019. Die Laufmaschine was nominated by the STIFTUNG BUCHKUNST for “Most Beautiful German Books" („Die Schönsten Deutschen Bücher“), Long List 2019. For this title I am offering foreign rights.

"Wilhelm Meister lebt mit seiner Mutter in der Heide so dahin, unlustig und voller Sehnsucht. Er möchte Schriftsteller werden. Unterwegs trifft er den alten Mann mit Mignon und die Schauspielerin Therese Farner. In Soest sprechen sie über die Einsamkeit und die Natur, über die Angst in Deutschland und über ihre Träume. Der Alte wurde seinerzeit aus einem fehlgeleiteten Naturgefühl erbarmungslos gegen die Menschen. Er tötete einen Juden; jetzt hofft er auf Vergessen in der Naturbetrachtung. Wilhelm sucht Therese und findet Mignon. Eine Zeitlang leben sie in Schwalbach im Taunus zusammen. Therese stört, daß Wilhelm beim Schreiben alles andere gleichgültig wird, der Alte ist hilflos und erbärmlich in seiner Einsamkeit; der alltägliche Wahnsinn ringsum nimmt zu. Therese bleibt mit Mignon zurück, als Wilhelm seine Reise durch Deutschland fortsetzt und auf der Zugspitze im Schneesturm mit dem eigentlichen Schreiben beginnt. Das ist die Geschichte der Filmerzählung Falsche Bewegung."

The Admiral’s Baths is composed of four inter-connected stories, each told from the perspective of a different woman in her own time period. The story opens as a contemporary historian conducts research at the baths, making discoveries which lead us back in time. History unfolds through the stories of the struggles, desires, tragedies, and triumphs of these four protagonists. Although they are separated by hundreds of years, we find that what connects them is more powerful than the passage of time. The Admiral’s Baths (102,300 words) revolves around an actual monument in Valencia, Spain, a medieval public bathhouse which was open for nearly seven centuries and is now a museum. Some years ago, I translated several articles about the monument, covering its history, owners, architecture, and restoration. I became fascinated with the subject, and was particularly struck by its longevity. The Baths’ long history became an integral part of the story; instead of choosing one moment in the Baths’ – and Spain’s—history, I chose four: the 14th, 16th, and 19th centuries as well as the 21st.

How far will they be willing to go to prevent the other from knowing?
