        Bertrand Blier

        by Sue Harris

        The most complete study of Blier's work to date, Harris traces the director's career from the early 1960s until the present. Outlines the forms, themes and style which dominate in Blier's work, and challenges the many labels that have been used to describe both the corpus of films and the man himself. Provides an original and controversial discussion of Blier's alleged 'misogyny', and invites the reader to understand the scatological and corporeal aspects of Blier's filmmaking in terms of long-established traditions of popular dramatic culture. Brings to light the comic mechanisms underpinning Blier's films and identifies strategies which navigate through one of the most entertaining and disconcerting bodies of work of recent years. The first book on Blier published in English.

        Men, ideas and tanks

        British military thought and armoured forces, 1903?39

        by J. P. Harris

        Men, ideas and tanks reviews the development of British military ideas on armoured forces from 1903 to 1939. Great Britain was the nation which first developed the tank, first used it in action and first gained dramatic results by employment. The British continued to be world leaders in the field of mechanised warfare until the early 1930s. J. P. Harris offers strikingly new interpretations of the early history of British armoured forces and explains why Great Britain had lost the lead by the outbreak of the Second World War. Available in paperback once more, this work will be of interest to all those concerned with British military history in the first half of the twentieth century, with the history of mechanised warfare and with the history of military thought. ;

        »Seither schlief sie bei meiner Frau«

        Katzengeschichten

        by Matthias Reiner, Isabel Pin

        »Meine neuen Bücher liest sie grundsätzlich nicht, nicht einmal, wenn sie darin vorkommt, die einzige erkennbare Emotion zeigt sich beim Duft gegrillter Sardinen oder sonstiger Köstlichkeiten. Nur manchmal, ganz hin und wieder und ohne dass wir wissen, warum gerade dann, sucht sie plötzlich einen Schoß auf und beginnt zu schnurren wie ein alter Schiffsmotor. Rätsel.« (Cees Nooteboom) Der Band versammelt die schönsten Katzengeschichten von Raymond Chandler bis Wisława Szymborska, von Patricia Highsmith bis Eva Demski, zauberhaft illustriert von Isabel Pin: nicht nur für Katzenfreunde. »In Wahrheit bin ich mehr auf sie angewiesen als sie auf mich.« Marlen Haushofer

        Local government today

        by J. Chandler, Bill Jones

        Local government today provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, finance, management and democratic framework for local government in Britain. This new edition has been substantially rewritten to encompass the many changes to the structure and function of the system since 2000, including developments flowing from the 2007 Local Government Act. The study discusses how, during the Blair years, local governments came to be seen once again as centrally important institutions within Britain's political system. However, they are not seen as organisations that can function as separate agencies, undertaking all their duties 'in-house'. They are now required to work in partnership with the private, public and voluntary sectors to deliver local services and represent local interests. It is further argued that, for the first time in over a century, the barriers between civil servants and senior local government officers are being eroded as central government begins to incorporate leading local government officials into its decision-making processes. This established textbook also offers a comparative focus by showing how the British system differs from the structures for local governance in Western Europe and the United States. ;

        Zwei Leben

        Psychothriller

        by Tania Chandler, Thomas Wörtche, Karen Witthuhn

        Brigitte hat zwei Leben gelebt. Im ersten Leben war sie Tabledancer, Model, ein bisschen Anschaffen, ein bisschen Drogen, und mit einem fatalen Händchen für böse Jungs. Mit einem von ihnen, einem Musikproduzenten, Dealer und Zuhälter, lebte sie damals zusammen. Als er ermordet wurde, geriet sie unter Verdacht, aber der Fall wurde nie aufgeklärt. Das war in den Zeiten des Grunge und ihres Idols Kurt Cobain. Ihr zweites Leben heute: Sie hat einen Polizisten geheiratet, hat Kinder, versucht ein bürgerliches Leben in Melbourne zu leben. Dann nimmt eine Cold Case Unit den Fall von damals wieder auf, viel Verdrängtes kommt mit der Zeit nach oben. Der Cop, der die neue Untersuchung leitet, scheint alles andere als ein Gentleman zu sein. Kleine Irritationen drohen zur Katastrophe zu werden. Brigittes neues Leben beginnt, aus den Fugen zu geraten – höchste Zeit, sich zu wehren.
