EXCAVANDO LA CIUDAD DE DAVID – El lugar en el que comenzף la historia de Jerusalיn Las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en los 150 últimos años han identificado a la colina sudoriental de Jerusalén, fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja, como la Ciudad de David bíblica. El reconocimiento cada vez mayor de que esta colina es efectivamente la parte más antigua de Jerusalén ha llevado a muchos estudiosos a excavarla. Desde las primeras excavaciones hechas por Charles Warren en 1867 hasta el presente, catorce expediciones arqueológicas han trabajado allí, lo que ha hecho que la Ciudad de David sea uno de los sitios más excavados de Israel. Equipos británicos, alemanes, franceses e israelíes han excavado en el lugar bajo cuatro autoridades diferentes: el gobierno otomano, el mandato británico, el gobierno jordano y el israelí y han producido una asombrosa cantidad de información. Jene Schattenlinie, die unsere unbekümmerte Jugend vom Beginn unserer Reife trennt, von unserem neuen Verantwortungsgefühl für die anderen, die Gesellschaft, läßt dieser Schiffskommandant für immer hinter sich. »Schattenlinie« erschien 1917. Der Roman ist das Meisterwerk aus der Spätzeit des Autors Joseph Conrad. Zugleich ist er sein einziger autobiographischer Roman. Er selbst, Conrad, ist also der Ich-Erzähler, der neuernannte Kapitän. Auch er erhielt sein erstes Kommando in Bankok. Mit siebzehn verließ er seine Heimat. Rund zwanzig Jahre fuhr er zur See. Sein Vater war sprachlich und literarisch begabt, übersetzte englische, französische und deutsche Klassiker und schrieb selber patriotische und religiöse Gedichte. Wegen seiner Zugehörigkeit zur polnischen Untergrundbewegung wurde er verhaftet und mit seiner Familie ins nordrussische Exil geschickt. Nach ihrer Begnadigung und Rückkehr verstarben beide Eltern kurz hintereinander und Conrad wuchs fortan bei seinem Onkel in Krakau auf. Im Alter von siebzehn Jahren heuerte er in Marseille bei der französischen Marine an. Bis 1894 befuhr Conrad zunächst unter französischer, später unter britischer Flagge die Weltmeere, dann mußte er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen die Seefahrt aufgeben. Er ließ sich in England nieder und widmete sich seinen literarischen Arbeiten. Obwohl kein Muttersprachler wurde er bald zu einem der meistgelesenen Autoren seines Landes und zählt bis heute zu einem Klassiker der englischen Sprache. Er starb am 3. August 1924 in Canterbury.

"Das »Bacon-Projekt« definiert einen Grundzug der Moderne; während in der Antike die Erkenntnis der Natur als Selbstzweck galt, betrachtet sie die Neuzeit als ein Mittel zur Mehrung des allgemeinen Menschenwohls. Die Naturforschung soll die Entwicklung einer Technik ins Werk setzen und damit dem Menschen Machtmittel zur Verfügung stellen, durch die er sich aus materieller Not und Naturabhängigkeit befreien kann. Francis Bacon (1551-1626) war der Propagandist der neuen Zielbestimmung der Naturforschung. Die in den modernen Industrieländern praktizierte technische Form der Naturnutzung ist infolge der jetzt offenkundig werdenden Schädigungen an der Natur zunehmend unter Kritik geraten. Mit den Befunden der »ökologischen Krise« wird nicht nur auf die Bedrohlichkeit der Technikfolgeschäden hingewiesen, sondern es wird zugleich die neuzeitliche Art der Naturforschung für die absehbare Katastrophe verantwortlich gemacht. Hans Jonas hat deshalb verlangt, daß wir das »Baconsche Ideal« aufgeben und uns dem Gedanken der Bewahrung der Natur verschreiben. Nicht länger sollten Ziele und Zwecke des Menschen die Grundlage unseres Handelns gegenüber der Natur sein; das »Prinzip Verantwortung« gebiete vielmehr, die in der westlichen Zivilisation dominant gewesene »Anthropozentrik« zu verabschieden und die Eigenrechte der Natur in unserem Handeln zu respektieren. Gegen diese pauschale Beschuldigung der Moderne ist die vorliegende Studie gerichtet. Schäfer sieht durch die ökologische Krise nicht die Aufkündigung des Baconschen Ideals geboten - wohl aber eine drastische Revision des »Baconschen Programms«, d.h. der Mittel und Methoden, mit denen das Ideal seither verfolgt wurde."
