        Gespräche mit Herbert Marcuse

        Gesprächsteilnehmer: Herbert Marcuse, Jürgen Habermas, Tilman Spengler, Silvia Bovenschen, Marianne Schuller, Berthold Rothschild, Theo Pinkus, Erica Sherover, Heinz Lubasz, Alfred Schmidt, Ralph Dahrendorf, Karl Popper, Rudi Dutschke, Hans Christoph Buch

        by Herbert Marcuse, Hans-Martin Lohmann

        Concepts for Understanding Fruit Trees

        by Theodore M. DeJong

        Anyone who observes fruit trees may wonder how or why they behave in specific ways. Some trees grow upright whilst others are more spreading in habit. Some produce many flowers and small immature fruit only to drop most of the fruit later on; others grow more on their sunny side than their shady side. It is common to ascribe such behavior to the tree as a whole and state that trees preferentially "allocate" resources to specific organs. However, this is the wrong approach to understanding tree functioning and behavior. Trees are not in control of what they do. What trees do and how they function is shaped by the individual organs that make up the tree, not by the tree as a whole. The genetic code only indirectly determines the habit, structure and behavior of a tree by defining the behavioral and functional limits of the component organs, tissues and cells. Unlike animals that have a mechanism for collective control of the whole organism - a central nervous system - trees (and plants in general) are more appropriately considered as collections of semi-autonomous organs. These organs are dependent on one another for resources, such as water, energy and nutrients, but control their own destiny. This book presents a clear set of integrative concepts for understanding the overall physiology and growth of temperate deciduous fruit trees. The emphasis is on overarching principles rather than detailed descriptions of tree physiology or differences among the numerous species of fruit trees. Although the focus is on deciduous fruit trees many aspects apply to evergreen fruit trees and trees that grow naturally in unmanaged situations. Highly relevant for students and researchers in pomology, horticulture and plant sciences, the book is also suitable for practitioners, extension staff, and novice fruit tree growers.

        Marx und Keynes

        by Harald Scherf

        Die beiden einflußreichsten Ökonomen der letzten 150 Jahre waren Häretiker der ökonomischen Wissenschaft – sie wußten dies und haben beide doch unübersehbar als Pioniere der politischen Ökonomie Geltung beansprucht. Beiden war klar, daß ihre jeweilige Mission nicht auf den Bereich der Wissenschaft beschränkt bleiben durfte, wenn sie erfolgreich sein sollte. Marx᾿ Diktum, man könne die Philosophie nicht verwirklichen, ohne sie aufzuheben, hat ihr Pendant in Keynes᾿ Vorstellung, daß seine Theorie mit »Politik, Gefühlen und Passionen gemischt« werden müsse, um geeignete Wirkungen hervorzubringen. Kritik an der herrschenden Wissenschaft aber gilt beiden dafür als Voraussetzung. Durch Gegenüberstellung und Konzentration werden in den hier veröffentlichten Essays die ökonomischen Theorien von Karl Marx und John Maynard Keynes aufgeschlossen und beleuchtet. Harald Scherf legt dar, daß der von beiden jeweils schon in frühen Jahren entworfene Ökonomiebegriff für die Theorien des reifen Werks, deren konkrete Anwendungen und die von ihnen ausgehenden politischen Entwicklungen bestimmend gewesen ist. Auch die Zukunftsperspektiven von Marx und Keynes erweisen sich von ihrem Ökonomiebegriff beeinflußt. Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit beiden Autoren geschieht – sympathisierend – im Lichte unserer Erfahrung.

        Michaelmas Term

        Thomas Middleton

        by David Bevington, Gail Paster, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich, Hazel Bell

        Michaelmas Term is one of five satiric city comedies that the young playwright Thomas Middleton wrote for the boy players of St Paul's Cathedral, sometime before 1607. Set in a vividly detailed, realistic urban milieu at the start of London's social season, the play comes alive through the central contest between Ephestian Quomodo, an ambitious, land-hungry city merchant, and Richard Easy, a naive landowning gallant just arrived in the city. Easy is soon deep in debt and his struggle to recoup his debts and reclaim his land from Quomodo takes places against a sharply drawn set of London types - Quomodo's socially and sexually ambitious wife and daughter, the Scottish upstart Andrew Lethe, and his mistress the Country Wench, eager to exchange her virginity for an elegant new wardrobe. With its witty, bawdy dialogue and complex gulling action, the play offers an unusually cynical assessment of the social and familial displacements, and of the alienation and loss of cultural memory, so characteristic of life in the great metropolis of early modern London. In this sense, the play is an early satiric diagnosis of urban modernity. This edition, newly collated and edited, features complete explanations of the play's often bawdy exchanges and the complex stage action of the gulling and secondary plots. It will be invaluable for advanced students of the Middleton canon as well as all those interested in early modern London and its vibrant theatrical culture, especially the tradition of boy choristers as professional actors. ;

        by Michele Heeney

        Visit Michele Heeney's take on recurring themes of obsession, oppression, love, pain, loss and one's own nagging self in the verse and photography of The Monkey Tree. Humor, sorrow, introspection, anger and wonder access the extraordinary and mundane in Heeney's exploration of emotion -- the monkey on everyone's back. Varied perspectives and bemused detachment reflect Buddhist philosophy while moderating the primacy of the human ego. The reader observes and participates in this slender volume.

Duvall, Martin Farr, John Heeley, Andrew Holden, Stanislav Ivanov, Heather Jeffrey, Gabriele Manella, Chris Ryan, Asterio Savelli, Hongdi Shen, John E Tunbridge, David Weaver, Paul F Wilkinson

        This new book reviews all aspects of the phenomenon of mass tourism. It covers theoretical perspectives (including political economy, ethics, sustainability and environmentalism), the historical context, and the current challenges to domestic, intra-regional and international mass tourism. As tourism and tourist numbers continue to grow around the world, it becomes increasingly important that this subject is studied in depth and best practice applied in real-life situations. This book: - Is the first to address a range of theoretical issues relating to mass tourism; - Uses a wide selection of case studies to translate theory into practice, covering the historical rise and fall of UK seaside resorts, the increase in Chinese tourism, conflict between different mass tourism groups, destination transformation from mass to niche tourism, and specific problems facing cruise ships; - Is written by a range of international, established authors to give a global perspective on the subject. Finishing with a speculative chapter identifying potential future trends and challenges, this book forms an essential resource for all researchers and students within tourism studies. ; Section 1: Introduction1: Introduction: Mass Tourism in a Small WorldSection 2: Theoretical Approaches to Mass Tourism2: Mass Tourism Does Not Need Defending3: The Morality of Mass Tourism4: The Political Economy of Mass Tourism and its Contradictions5: A Theoretical Approach to Mass Tourism in Italy6: Sustainability and Mass Tourism: A Contradiction in Terms?7: Mass Tourism and the Environment: Issues and DilemmasSection 3: Historical Studies of Tourism Development8: The Dynamics of Tourism Development in Britain: The Profit Motive and that ‘Curious’ Alliance of Private Capital and the Local State9: From Holiday Camps to the All-inclusive: the ‘Butlinization’ of Tourism10: Decline Beside the Seaside: British Seaside Resorts and Declinism11: Mass Tourism and the US National Park Service System12: Transport and Tourism: The Perpetual LinkSection 4: Case Studies in Modern Mass Tourism13: Mass Tourism and China14: Mass Tourism in Thailand: The Chinese and Russians15: Mass Tourism in Bulgaria: The Force Awakens16: Mass Tourism in Mallorca: Examples from Calivià17: Tunisia: Mass Tourism in Crisis?18: From Blue to Grey? Lorca's Romancero gitano

        Eighteen commentaries

        by Herbert Ramsden

        This poem-by-poem guide to Lorca's Romancero gitano was prompted by the need for some form of guidance to the overwhelming amount of critical material published on the book, the relative neglect or misunderstanding of certain poems and a concern to counter a recent tendency to eccentric interpretation. Herbert Ramsden's comprehensive collection of commentaries will be useful both for students and teachers and for the Lorca specialist. With each poem the author offers a brief introduction to relevant background material, a comprehensive commentary, a brief indication of interpretations notably different from his own and a select critical bibliography. In a more general bibliography, the author lists a number of translations of Romancero gitano into English and a selection of commentary-based studies. The great diversity and allusive richness of Lorca's poetic masterpiece demands more space than a compact student edition allows, and all serious students of Romancero gitano will want to use Herbert Ramsden's Eighteen commentaries alongside his simultaneously-published edition of the text. ;

        Über Peter Bichsel. Herausgegeben von Herbert Hoven

        by Herbert Hoven

        Das Portrait eines Schriftstellers, aus vielen wertvollen Mosaiken gestaltet: Jörg Steiner, Peter Weber, Rolf Niederhauser, Rolf Jucker, Marianne Frisch, Linda Reisch und viele mehr erzählen über Peter Bichsel, einen der großen, wichtigen Autoren unserer Zeit. Dabei entsteht aus seriösen wie humorvollen, nachdenklichen und persönlichen Beiträgen ein authentisches Bild, reich an Anekdoten wie die des Kollegen und Freundes Jörg Steiner: „Als wir uns kennenlernten, kannte er mich schon. Der Leser Peter Bichsel hatte sich entschlossen, alle anerkannten Schriftsteller zu bewundern und sie sich durch die Bewunderung vom Leib zu halten, mit der trotzigen Behauptung: Wenn der ein Schriftsteller ist, dann will ich keiner werden.“ Daß es anders gekommen ist, wissen wir. Und kann nachgelesen werden in diesem, von dem Germanisten Herbert Hoven herausgegebenen, munteren Lesebuch über Peter Bichsel.
