Hans-Henning Paetzke, geboren 1943 in Leipzig, absolvierte eine Schauspielausbildung, bevor er in Halle, Budapest und Frankfurt am Main klassische Philologie, Germanistik und Psychologie studierte. Seit 1968 ist er freiberuflich als literarischer Übersetzer, Herausgeber und Autor tätig. Hans-Henning Paetzke lebt in Budapest. Imre Kertész wurde am 9. November 1929 in Budapest geboren. Er stammt aus einer kleinbürgerlichen Familie. Wegen seiner jüdischen Abstammung wurde Kertész im Juli 1944 als Fünfzehnjähriger nach Auschwitz deportiert und im April 1945 aus dem KZ Buchenwald befreit. 1948 machte er Abitur und fand eine Anstellung als Journalist bei der Tageszeitung Világosság. Diese wurde alsbald zum Parteiorgan der Kommunisten erklärt und er entlassen. Von 1951 bis 1953 leistete er Militärdienst. 1960 begann er mit der Arbeit an seinem Roman Sorstalanság (dt. Mensch ohne Schicksal, 1990; Roman eines Schicksallosen, 1995). Nach jahrelangen erfolglosen Versuchen konnte das Buch 1975 in Ungarn veröffentlicht werden, erfuhr jedoch erst mit der zweiten Auflage 1985 literarische Beachtung. Seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente Imre Kertész daher hauptsächlich durch seine Arbeit als Übersetzer. Er übertrug unter anderem Werke von Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Elias Canetti, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Joseph Roth, Arthur Schnitzler und Tankred Dorst ins Ungarische. Als Sorstalanság 1995 in einer deutschen Neuübersetzung erschien, wurde es als literarisches Ereignis gefeiert und verhalf Imre Kertész zu seinem internationalen Durchbruch. Im Herbst 2002 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Seit 1953 lebt Kertész als freier Schriftsteller in Budapest.

A Kiss to My Mum is a novel that delves into the growth of a child from a single-parent family. The hero is a ten-year-old boy called Zhao Andi. He is Zhao Andi to his teacher, My Dear An to his father and Didi to his mother. At his father’s funeral, for the first time he sees his mother Shu Yimei, so beautiful as if she stepped down from a photo. At this gloomy moment Didi was pushed to an arduous cliff, on the other side of which is his mother Shu Yimei, blowing the scent of orange. The novel develops around the gradual emotional thaw of the boy and his mother. At first they cannot get along with and are watchful of each other. But distance gradually gives way to proximity and then to mutual understanding and harmony between the two on their way to the future. This is a story of a boy and his parents, singing high praise for children. It is also about our life, our minds and love. All the characters in the novel are very much realistic, including the boy of slight autism and the mother of slight depression. The atmosphere of modern life in the novel is achieved through the depiction of other characters such as the hero’s classmate and good friend Zhang Xiaochen, his sister Ke’er, his uncle Baolin and his English teacher Li Qinsong, a man of dubious identity, thus adding to the enjoyment of the book.

An Ecologically and Economically Important Tree on the Brink of Extinction

Extinction of species has alarmingly increased in recent decades due to anthropogenic activities, natural calamities and climate change. The life history, ecology and evolution of such species have often not been well studied. Gymnocladus assamicus is an archaic tree endemic to the Eastern Himalayan region of Northeast India. Locally known as 'Menangmanba-shi' by the Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh (India), mature G. assamicus pods contain high saponin and are used traditionally for cleansing purposes and rituals. We rediscovered the species after more than 70 years from high altitude areas in the Himalayas through extensive field explorations and employing an ecological niche modeling approach. Our study revealed a very few actively reproducing mature G. assamicus trees surviving in unique microclimatic conditions. The species is classified as 'critically endangered' (IUCN red list). The book contains detailed information about G. assamicus and discusses its current distribution, population status, ethnobotanical uses and other ecological parameters. Major intrinsic and extrinsic factors that might be responsible for population decline are described. More importantly, we reported a very rare mating system known as 'androdioecy' in which male and hermaphrodite individuals co-exist in the natural population. Overall, the book highlights the story of a critically endangered tree species with a unique biological and socio-cultural importance and will serve as a case study and referencefor other similar species both locally and globally.

In Terézia Moras Übersetzung sorgten sie vor Jahren für Begeisterung: die Minutennovellen von István Örkény, Kürzesttexte, »scharf, unerbittlich, gnadenlos: poetisch« (Péter Esterházy). Geschrieben in den wenigen freien Stunden, die er der Geschichte abtrotzen konnte. Diese Bedingungen galten noch radikaler für den dokumentarischen Roman Lagervolk. Örkény kam 1942 als jüdischer Arbeitsdienstler an die Ostfront. Das ungarische Armeekorps, in dem er diente, wurde Anfang 1943 am Don vernichtend geschlagen, die Überlebenden gerieten in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Zu Rodungsarbeiten an einer Bahnstation bei Tambow verurteilt, begann Örkény Aufzeichnungen zu machen - »mit etwas Bleistiftähnlichem auf Tabaksbeutel, die mir die Russen gegeben hatten«. Als sich herumsprach, daß er schrieb, strömten seine Leidensgenossen herbei. »Alle beeilten sich, etwas beizutragen: Daten, Erfahrungen, Namen, Tragödien, aber auch Anekdoten. Nicht ich habe dieses Buch geschrieben, sondern dreihunderttausend Ungarn in der Sowjetunion. Ich war nur ihr Chronist.« Zehn Lebensgeschichten, die weit in die Zwischenkriegszeit zurückgreifen, erweitern das Buch zu einer großen Erzählung voller ethnographischer und soziologischer Details. So präzise Hunger, Heimweh und Zwangsarbeit in Das Lagervolk geschildert sind, so unverkennbar atmet das 1947 veröffentlichte Werk den Geist der Hoffnung auf ein neues, freies, humanes Europa.

The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments.
