Modern European cinema and love examines nine European directors whose films contain stories about romantic love and marriage. The directors are Jean Renoir, Ingmar Bergman, Alain Resnais, Michelangelo Antonioni, Agnès Varda, François Truffaut, Federico Fellini, Jean-Luc Godard and Éric Rohmer. The book approaches questions of love and marriage from a philosophical perspective, applying the ideas of authors such as Stanley Cavell, Leo Bersani, Luce Irigaray and Alain Badiou, while also tracing key concepts from Freudian psychoanalysis. Each of the filmmakers engages deeply with notions of modern love and marriage, often in positive ways, but also in ways that question the institutions of love, marriage and the 'couple'.

Fragen, an deren Beantwortung sich entscheidet, ob wir – wie Lyotard glaubt – den Deutungsreserven »des Abendlandes« (in seiner letzten Ausprägung als »Moderne«) unwiderruflich entwachsen sind oder ob die Moderne – wie Habermas annimmt – das Zeug dazu hat , ihre Lernfähigkeit bis zur Selbstkritik zu steigern.

Die Anerkennung des Phänomens eines Vorsorgestaates erzwingt eine neue Analyse der Moderne, die denjenigen Untersuchungen widerspricht, die in der zunehmenden Technisierung der Welt und einem damit einhergehenden Sinnverlust ein Überhandnehmen des Nihilismus zu erkennen glauben. Die Perspektive, die der französische Philosoph François Ewald in diesem Band einnimmt, eröffnet einen völlig neuen Blick auf die Entwicklung des modernen Staates. Dies geschieht im Sinne einer Beschreibung sogenannter »Praktiken der Verantwortung«. Anhand der genauen Rekonstruktion eines Perspektivenwandels auf den »Arbeitsunfall« zeigt Ewald, wie die Kategorie des Risikos zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einer politischen wird. Dieser Wandel hat schließlich die Gründung einer Reihe von Versicherungen und Versicherungsanstalten zur Folge. Diese Veränderungen sind bisher immer als Geburt des Wohlfahrtsstaates beschrieben worden. Ewald zeigt dagegen, daß es sinnvoll ist, sie unter dem Begriff des »Vorsorgestaates« zu fassen. Die Analyse, die von Ewald hier vorgeführt wird, wirft ein vollkommen neues Licht auf philosophische wie auch rechtssoziologische Themen und Methoden – und das alles unter Foucaultscher Perspektive. Die Ausarbeitung des Modells eines Vorsorgestaates muß deswegen als Manifest einer neuen Rechtsphilosophie gelesen werden.

In early Christianity it was established that every church should have a light burning on the altar at all times. In this unique study, Eternal light and earthly concerns, looks at the material and social consequences of maintaining these 'eternal' lights. It investigates how the cost of lighting was met across western Europe throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, revealing the social organisation that was built up around maintaining the lights in the belief that burning them reduced the time spent in Purgatory. When that belief collapsed in the Reformation the eternal lights were summarily extinguished. The history of the lights thus offers not only a new account of change in medieval Europe, but also a sustained examination of the relationship between materiality and belief.

The book analyses how women artists' presence which was consistently one third of the artists in many major exhibiting groups became less than 10% of the museum purchases and in art historical texts for this period. Comparisons are made between the opportunities presented to women artists and those of their male peers in the light of considerable change and restructuring within the art world in Britain during this period, principally due to the growing influence of modernism in the art market. ;
