Eines Abends begegnet er dem Regisseur Raúl Ruiz, der ihm eine Filmrolle anbietet: Charles soll den Chirurg in einem Remake von Orlacs Hände spielen, er soll die Rolle jenes übernehmen, der dem Klaviervirtuosen, der nicht mehr spielen kann, die Hände eines verstorbenen Mörders annäht. Die Operation gelingt, die Hände aber suchen weiterhin nach einem Opfer. Der Roman, der jenen Übergriff eines unvollendeten Romans auf die Wirklichkeit und in die Kinowelt - und von dort zurück in den Roman - erzählt, leitet den Leser durch ein perfekt aufgebautes Spiegelkabinett: In ihm treffen Literatur, bildende Kunst und Film aus den unterschiedlichsten Epochen aufeinander, werden aufeinander geblendet und gehen ineinander über. Schuhl macht in diesem schmalen und dichten Meisterwerk ein zentrales Merkmal der Gegenwart erfahrbar: Die Realität ist brüchig geworden, jedes ihrer Teile verweist in die Vergangenheit wie in die Zukunft, auf diese Bilder und jene Filmszenen und diese Literatur. Das Resultat: Geister betreten die Bühne und beherrschen sie.
