View Rights PortalIn recent years, the ancient symbiosis between humans and their pets has entered a new phase, marked by the burgeoning clinical specialty of human-animal therapy. This approach uses the relationship between humans and their (mainly) mammalian pets to support the growth of emotion regulation, social skills, and mental health in children, adolescents, and adults. But how are humans and animals able to develop close bonds at all? What makes it possible for animals to have a therapeutic effect on humans? And how can we best use this understanding in animal-assisted therapy? In this unique book, a team of expert biologists and psychologists integrate and combine sophisticated biological and psychological knowledge to answer these questions. Together they have created a comprehensive, scientific foundation for human-animal therapy, a foundation that will facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective new interventions. Target Group: For Clinical psychiatrists, psychiatrists, mental health counselors, school psychologists, and other professionals interested in using pets and animals in therapy.
Vitamin D deficiency is a global health problem that puts the quality of life and life expectancy of more than a billion children and adults at risk worldwide. Many lifestyle diseases may be associated with vitamin D deficiency: myocardial infarction, infections, cancer, neurological diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, to name just a few. This 4th updated edition incorporates numerous new insights into the therapeutic effect of vitamin D, including its importance for a healthy pregnancy, prenatal imprinting, optimum sporting performance, diabetes mellitus and autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or multiple sclerosis. Since the metabolism and the effect of vitamin D are supported by a complex network of micronutrients – for example, magnesium, vitamin A or vitamin K – a specific chapter is devoted to this network. Here, the reader can discover how vitamin D successfully protects against diseases, improves the quality of life and optimises medication and treatment!

Tracing the McKenna brothers’ childhood in western Colorado during the 1950s and ’60s, Dennis chronicles their adolescent adventures and formative encounters with mind-altering substances, along with the people and ideas that shaped them both. Dennis, now world-renowned for this ethnobotanical work, describes his early interests in cosmology and astrology, his sometimes rocky relationship with his older brother, how their paths diverged later in life, and his mother’s and Terence’s battles with cancer. In his account of what has become known as “The Experiment at La Chorrera”—which Terence documented in his own 1989 book, True Hallucinations— Dennis describes visions of merging mushroom and human DNA, the brothers’ predictions for the future, and their evolving ideas about society and consciousness. In this updated edition, Dennis also reflects on scientific revelations, climate change, and the social and political crises of our time.

District D is a collection of stories united through a common time period and location, from which gradually emerges a portrait of the author against the backdrop of “other shores,” on which his childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood passed. The book paints a self-critical portrait of the author in which one can discern the features of husbandry and cosmopolitanism, pettiness and magnanimity, and much else. Simultaneously, it paints a group portrait of a few dozen more or less registered residents of the aforementioned Cherkasy district with their more or less successful attempts at surviving the unexpected transition from post-soviet to newly independent Ukraine. According to the author, District D served as therapy for his own traumatic experiences because he wrote it while serving in the war: “I would write it out of me and would feel better; I escaped from that war and those experiences into writing.”

WHERE ‘D YOU GO is a collection of short stories about terrorism in Northern Nigeria. The stories are action-packed, depicting loss, justice, vengeance, bravery, courage under fire, sacrifice and patriotism.
Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants. This book is enhanced with supporting material. To access the Online Supplementary Appendices below, please visit: http://www.cabi.org/openresources/95061.
