Mineral Nutrition Of Livestock 5th Edition

        by Neville Suttle

The fifth edition of this important book reviews recent advances in livestock mineral nutrition, updated throughout with new references that reflect the growing complexity of mineral metabolism. Major related themes covered include the assessment of the 'mineral value' of feeds, the false hopes placed on organic mineral supplements and limiting the 'mineral footprint' of livestock production to lower environmental pollution. Also discussed are new developments and concepts including: Salt tolerance and optimizing production in salt-rich environments. Use of phytase rather than phosphate supplements in pig and poultry rations. Demineralization of the skeleton during confinement. Recognition of sub-acute, clinical hypocalcaemia as a disorder in dairy cows. The assay of 'free' plasma B12 to assess cobalt status of cattle. Limitations of cell culture and ligated loop techniques for assessing bioavailability. Following a clear and easy to reference structure, the book also considers potential pitfalls, such as misleading estimates of mineral requirements for growth, and misinterpretation of genomic markers for mineral requirements and bioavailability of supplements. An essential resource for researchers and students in animal nutrition, agriculture and veterinary medicine, this book also forms a useful reference for veterinary practitioners and those concerned with human nutrition and environmental protection.

I Will Mix Your Blood With Coal. Understanding Ukrainian East

        by Oleksandr Mykhed

In 2014, the Russian army, with support from local militants, had occupied parts of Ukraine’s two easternmost regions, the regions that were the beating industrial heart of the socialist utopia in the Soviet era, and where coal extraction has exhausted both the human population and the natural resources. The regions have suffered from the post-Soviet chaos for decades. In the late 2016, the author set out on a research trip to the East to answer the common questions of those who’ve never been to the region. He takes his readers on a complicated, painful and hopeful trip across the Ukrainian East, guiding them through conversations with the locals, archival research, and conversations with prominent cultural fi gures like writer Serhij Zhadan or released after 700 days of terrorist captivity historian Ihor Kozlovskyi that were born in the region. The readers will meet the miners, the Belgian and British investors who founded the eastern cities, the priceless coal, events of the First and Second World War, the bloody Soviet history, the activists who are now working to improve the country, and sweet memories of the lost paradise.

        The Tide Tarrieth No Man

        by George Wapull

        by Peter Happe

This volume is a photographic facsimile from the copy of the play by George Wapull in the Harry Ransom Centre. It was originally printed in 1576 by Hugh Jackson, and is one of only five extant copies. The introduction discusses the place of this play in Jackson's output, including two other interludes printed by him shortly afterwards. Besides compositorial practice and some irregularities, it addresses the identity of the author, historical detail about the surviving copies, and the editorial contribution of John Payne Collier. The text is rich in stage directions and aspects of performance are discussed including the doubling scheme for four players and the active role of the Vice. The play was written at a time when interludes designed for small acting troupes were popular and exhibited remarkable theatrical expertise. The intellectual context is considered, and in particular the place of this play among the considerable number of surviving interludes from London which focus upon wealth and its abuses and other matters of economic importance at the time.

        Rückkehr stromauf

        Gedichte

        by René Char, Peter Handke

        Micronutrient Depleters: Metformin

Things to know about medicines and micronutrients

by Uwe Gröber and Prof. Dr. Klaus Kisters

This guide provides patients with important medical information about interactions of their drug products with vitamins and minerals. These interactions are not always listed in the accompanying package inserts. Taking the diabetes drug metformin can cause a vitamin B12 deficiency, which causes severe nerve damage. Besides vitamin B12, other micronutrients such as magnesium, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin D and chromium can support the therapy with metformin and other diabetes medicines. This way, patients can optimise their treatment, reduce the side effects of their medication and improve their quality of life!

        Micronutrient Depleters: Acid Blockers

Things to know about medicines and micronutrients

by Uwe Gröber and Prof. Dr. Klaus Kisters

This guide provides patients with important medical information about interactions of their drug products with vitamins and minerals. These interactions are not always listed in the accompanying package inserts. Those who take acid blockers such as omeprazole or pantoprazole may not only develop disorders relating to calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and bone metabolism in the long term, but above all become deficient in vitamin B12. This way, patients can improve their treatment, reduce the side effects of their medication and increase their quality of life!

Controlling Mineral Emissions in European Agriculture

        Economics, Policies and the Environment

by Edited by Eirik Romstad, Jesper Simonsen, Arild Vatn

Mineral emissions from agriculture include nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals, derived particularly from fertilizer use and farm animal wastes in intensive agricultural systems. These have the potential to cause pollution and affect the quality of water, soils and agricultural produce. Interest in this subject has increased substantially in recent years, resulting in reforms of part of the Common Agricultural Policy as well as the development of special directives in the European Union. This book presents analyses of the economics and policy options related to nonpoint-source pollution in European agriculture. It brings together several disciplines and has been developed from a workshop held in Norway in January 1996. This workshop was one of four, each focusing on a key theme as part of the EU Concerted Action, “Policy measures to control environmental impacts from agriculture”. The book includes both theoretical analyses and empirical studies from several countries. It represents an important volume for research academics and professionals in soil science, environmental and pollution studies, and agricultural and environmental economics and policy.
