There are 130 chapters in the book, divided into five styles: Benji, Table, Book, Family, and Biographies. Among them, there are twelve in Benji, ten in table, eight in books, thirty in family, and seven in biographies. Ten articles. The book records three thousand years of historical events from the ancient times of Xia, Shang, Western Zhou, Spring and Autumn, Warring States, Qin to Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. The content involves politics, economics, military, culture, academic, astronomy, geography and even medical skills in the above-mentioned periods. , Etc. In addition to the Han Dynasty, there are surrounding ethnic minorities and countries outside the region. It had a profound influence on the history and literature of later generations.

This unique text raises important issues concerning power, race, gender and class in colonial societies, colonial and post-colonial subjectivity and identities, feminist appropriations of the abolitionist agenda, human rights discourse, and literary and philosophical issues associated with enlightenment thought. This new annotated critical edition is the first to provide the original Spanish text along with a substantial and authoritative introduction in English, as well as maps and tables relating to nineteenth-century Cuba, a vocabulary list, and suggestions for further reading.
