Tourism is the world’s fastest growing industry, and impacts globally upon ecology, economies, peoples, cultures and the built environment. Development, therefore, must be sustainable and sympathetic in order to preserve the environment and culture it exploits. Despite sustainable tourism being an area of considerable recent interest, there has been no synthesis of the diverse considerations of sustainable tourism, and the language and terms particular to this subject. An important resource for researchers of tourism, this reference work defines and explains terms associated with considering and preserving the environment, host peoples, communities, cultures, customs, lifestyles and social and economic systems. ; Tourism is the world’s fastest growing industry and has global impacts. Sweetpotato and potato are expanding faster than any other food crops in sub-Saharan Africa. There is growing investment in research to address bottlenecks in value chains concerning these two crops, and growing interest from the private sector in investing in them. This book addresses five major themes on sweetpotato and potato: policies for germplasm exchange, food security and trade in Africa; seed systems; breeding and disease management; post-harvest management, processing technologies and marketing systems; nutritional value and changing behaviours. This volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Covering subjects including ceremonial events, such as the spectacles and gargantuan banquets that made the Burgundian dukes the talk of Europe, the workings of the court, and jousting, archery and rhetoric competitions, the book will appeal to students of late medieval and early modern Europe and to those with wider interests in court culture, ritual and ceremony.
The expansion of mass tourism is becoming highly unpopular and 'tourism-phobia', often expressed in the form of anti-tourism marches, is spreading across various destinations. In light of this, there is a paradigm shift from 'tourism growth' to 'tourism degrowth' through a desire for a drastic transformation of the tourism industry. Degrowth is a key strategy to balance tourism growth. It works to ensure that the direction of institutional change and the orientation of technological development are controlled and in harmony with the environment. Degrowth involves people whose use of personal time enhances the richness of the experience through traveling less, more slowly and using low carbon options, taking time to support the environment, the local economy and to explore the local culture. This book addresses the paucity of combined research on tourism and degrowth by presenting emergent knowledge and research on this increasingly important concept. In this book: - The core theme of degrowth from a tourism perspective is outlined. - Content is enriched with contributions from multi-disciplinary academics from around the World. - Theory is put in to practice via international case studies. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the book, the contents will appeal to researchers and postgraduates studying tourism, environmental studies, geography, planning and development and other related disciplines.
