The Artist of the Future Age: William Blake, Neo-Romanticism, Counterculture and Now

This special issue of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library is devoted to William Blake. It explores the British and European reception of Blake's work from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on the counterculture. Opening with two articles by the late Michael Horovitz, an important figure in the 'Blake Renaissance' of the 1960s, the issue goes on to investigate the ideological struggle over Blake in the early part of the twentieth century, with particular reference to W. B. Yeats. This is followed by articles on the artistic avant-garde and underground of the 1960s and on Blake's significance for science fiction authors of the 1970s. The issue closes with an article on the contemporary Belgian art collective maelstrÖm reEvolution.

Max Tarnavskii is a young writer once recognized by the young audience for his debut novel about young counterculture but then scathingly criticized for his third novel "Where the Wind Is", — a philosophical parable about a hermit living in a lighthouse by the sea. Having fallen off the readers’ radar, he suffers through his inability to create any further. It’s the second half of the 2010s, Kyiv. On the New Year’s Eve Max gets an offer from Alisa, a first-year student, to go on a tour with a young rock band as a gonzo journalist to revive his counterculture icon status. Max balks at first, but an unexpected brawl on Facebook in which Max is reminded about his passivity during the Maidan and his uncertain ideological views in the days of the ATO and the war, and a critical review of Max’s new novel outline from his literary agent urge Tarnavskii to accept the offer after all. The rock band he joins for a tour from Western to Eastern Ukraine has turned up to be an inept group trip planner, so the protagonist has to take up the role of a leader capable of saving the band from a total fiasco. Traveling with the teenage freshmen becomes the young writer’s road to adulthood, forgiveness, and an attempt to forgive his own mistakes of youth in particular. Just to earn his living, Max agrees to perform with the rockers while on tour, flies in the face of his creative fears, and is forced to redefine himself as a writer once again. He faces the dangers of concert disruptions, the band split up, public disapproval, and threats of physical violence. Ability to write on the road becomes his only way to save and revive his own self, stand up to his hidden weaknesses, reconsider his role in a society that undergoes a war. A post-tour trip with Alisa to her grandmother who lives in a village on the liberated from the occupation territories becomes Tarnavskii’s hope for a renewal. On this trip Max gets a chance to full recovery, because in Tarnavskii’s mind these are the parts, where he will find the sand bar with the lighthouse where the hermit from his novel "Where the Wind Is" lives.

Crafting design in Italy is the first book to examine the role that craft played in post-war Italian design, one of the most celebrated design episodes in the twentieth century. Craft was vital to the development of Italian design, and it has been so far overlooked. This book examines the multiple ways craft shaped Italian design from 1945 to the 1980s in the context of bigger socio-economic, cultural and political change; from post-war reconstruction to the economic 'miracle' of the 1960s, to the rise of the countercultural Radical Design movement and advent of postmodernism. It consists of case studies on design areas including product, furniture, fashion, glass and ceramics to bring to light previously unknown makers and objects as well as re-examine design 'icons' such as Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair and Ettore Sottsass's Memphisware. It also offers a model for analysing design and craft's relationship in other contexts, including today. ;

Epistemology, Methodology and Representation

Much has been written about lifehistory research in recent times. It has been paraded as a counterculture to the traditional research canon, and celebrated as a genre that promotes methodological pluralism. However, lifehistory researchers have an obligation to transcend spurious claims about the perceived merits of the methodology and extend the debates around how the genre simultaneously problematises and responds to the competing challenges of Epistemology, Methodology and Representation. In conceiving of each of the chapters from an epistemological perspective, the authors focus on how their individual work has crossed or expanded traditional borders of epistemology and ontology; of how the work has satisfied the rigours of thesis production and contributed to changing conceptions of knowledge, what knowledge gets produced and how knowledge is produced when we make particular methodological choices. Since any methodological orientation is invariably selective, and the researcher is always involved and implicated in the production of data, the authors focus on what selections they have made in their projects, what governed these choices, what benefits/deficits those choices yielded, and what the implications of their research are for those meta-narratives that have established the regimes of truth, legitimacy, and veracity in research. Knowledge production is inextricably linked to representation. In the process of articulating their findings, each author made particular representational choices, sometimes transgressing conventional approaches. The book explores why these choices were made and how the choices influenced the kinds of knowledge generated. The book provides theoretical justifications for these transgressions and reflect on how the experience of representation helped disrupt the authors’ essentialist notions of research production and for whom it is produced. This book is not another celebration of lifehistory as a counterculture. The book hopes to be a deeply critical contribution to disrupt notions around epistemological authority, voice and power and how these are mediated by the delicate relations of the researcher and researched. The problematises and complicates the assumptions that frame this genre with a view to highlighting the potential hazards of the method while demonstrating its potentiality in shaping our conceptions of Ethics, Methodology and Representation.

What I See: The Black Flag Photographs of Glen E. Friedman is an incredible compilation of all of Friedman’s most iconic and recognizable images (from 1980 to 1983), of this seminal American punk band, as well as over one hundred never-before-seen photos made during those phenomenal peak years in the group’s history. The book includes a foreword by Chuck Dukowski, a cofounder and bass player of Black Flag. Friedman’s own introduction to the book takes readers through his journey with the group, from the very first time he saw them play, to his perspectives on the music of the era, to the how, why, and what Black Flag were doing at the time. His words provide additional context to the imagery, explaining what drove him to create his art alongside the band. From the streets around Black Flag’s single-room home base/office, rehearsing for their first album, handing out flyers, wheat-pasting posters, driving for hours to a show and returning the same night, house parties, clubs, to the big stage and the beach, Glen E. Friedman was there with his heart, soul, and most importantly his camera. In What I See, he shares with us and inspires us with these images that were made over an incredibly volatile four-year time span.
