Carol Reed

Carol Reed is one of the truly outstanding directors of British cinema, and one whose work is long overdue for reconsideration. This major study ranges over Reed's entire career, combining observation of general trends and patterns with detailed analysis of twenty films, both acknowledged masterpieces and lesser-known works. Evans avoids a simplistic auteurist approach, placing the films in their autobiographical, socio-political and cultural contexts and relating these to the analysis of Reed's art. The critical approach combines psychoanalysis, gender theory, and the analysis of form. Archival research is also relied on to clarify Reed's relations with his creative team, financial backers and others. Films examined include Bank Holiday, A Girl Must Live, Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol, The Third Man, Night Train to Munich, The Way Ahead, Outcast of the Islands, Trapeze and Oliver!.

»Fröstelnd unter den Masken des Wissens, / Von Unerhörtem verstört, / Traumlos am Tag unter zynischen Uhren, …« – die neuen Gedichte des einunddreißigjährigen Lyrikers Durs Grünbein zeugen in radikalisierter Weise von schmerzhaft desillusioniertem Bewußtsein und einem schonungslosen Blick auf die Anatomie unserer Zeit und ihrer Menschen. Bereits in seinem ersten Gedichtband Grauzone morgens bilanzierte der aus Dresden stammende Durs Grünbein das Lebensgefühl seiner Generation im sozialistischen Ghetto.Durs Grünbeins zweites Buch Schädelbasislektion blickte unsentimental zurück auf den Zerfall der DDR und sezierte in wuchtig-wahrnehmungsscharfen Gedichtzyklen den Raum zwischen Gehirn und Schädeldecke, um Ich und Sprache sarkastisch zu diagnostizieren: »Was Du bist steht am Rand / anatomischer Tafeln.«Zwischen 1991 und 1994 entstanden, zeigt Durs Grünbeins dritte Sammlung von Gedichten – Falten und Fallen – die Fortschreibung eines poetischen Konzepts.Im Ausgang von präzisen Beobachtungen des Alltags, am Ort, wo das Banale und das Symbolische sich überschneiden, und auf den Spuren von Verletzung und Begehren sucht diese analytische Lyrik den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Physis zu erkunden: »Denk von den Wundrändern her, vom Veto / Der Eingeweide, vom Schweigen / Der Schädelnähte. Das Aufgehen der Monde / Über den Nagelbetten führt / Andere Himmel herauf, strenger gestirnt.«Das Gedicht, schrieb Durs Grünbein, führt »idealerweise das Denken in einer Folge physiologischer Kurzschlüsse vor. Jeder Entladung folgt sofort wieder ein Spannungsaufbau und umgekehrt. Die Energie hierfür liefert ein Komplex, der eigentlich nur unzureichend mit ›Körper‹ bezeichnet ist, weil er sehr viel tiefer unter die Haut geht.«

This book mainly describes the origin of the Ewenki ethnic group's god of fire sacrificial custom. According to legend, a poor hunter went hunting a long time ago, but he ran for a whole day without catching any prey. When he was tired and hungry, a cave appeared in front of his eyes. He walked into the cave in a daze and fell asleep. When he woke up, he found two completely different houses, one was owned by the rich and the other was by the poor. The hunter went to the rich's house for help, but was expelled by the rich with disgust. The hunter then went to the poor's house and was warmly welcomed. At this time, the hunter heard someone talking on the roof: "Let me punish the greedy rich!" Then the hunter realized that the man on the roof was the god of fire, whom everyone feared. The Ewenki people regard the 23rd of December every year as the God of Fire Festival.
