Max Frisch, geboren am 15. Mai 1911 in Zürich, arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, später als Architekt, bis ihm mit seinem Roman Stiller (1954) der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller gelang. Es folgten die Romane Homo faber (1957) und Mein Name sei Gantenbein (1964) sowie Erzählungen, Tagebücher, Theaterstücke, Hörspiele und Essays. Frisch starb am 4. April 1991 in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Jetzt ist Sehenszeit (Suhrkamp 1998) sowie jetzt: max frisch (Suhrkamp 2001) und arbeitet als freier Journalist und Autor in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Demokratie – so die zentrale These des Autors – sollte man als eine besondere Form der Kooperation verstehen. Diese These steht im Gegensatz zu einer verbreiteten Rhetorik, die in der sogenannten »Selbstbestimmung des Volkes« die Essenz einer demokratischen Ordnung sieht. Demokratie, so die hier entwickelte Gegenposition, bedarf keines kollektiven Akteurs. Die Idee einer Repräsentation des Volkswillens ist das späte Relikt feudalistischen Gottesgnadentums; sie erschwert die Entwicklung lebensfähiger föderaler Strukturen unterhalb der »nationalstaatlichen« Ebene und den Aufbau supranationaler demokratischer Institutionen. Demokratie als Kooperation steht jedoch auch in einem Gegensatz zur ökonomistischen Spielart des Pluralismus, dem zufolge Demokratie sich darauf beschränkt, bestimmte Spielregeln festzulegen, innerhalb deren Menschen ihre privaten Interessen optimieren. Die Auflösung der Bürgerschaft in konkurrierende Interessenmaximierer unterminiert die demokratische Verfassung eines Gemeinwesens. Die Suprematie des Marktes bedroht die Demokratie ebenso wie die Suprematie einzelner kollektiver Identitäten. Einem einleitenden Kapitel über politische Ethik folgen Studien zur Kooperationsproblematik in der politischen Philosophie. Hauptziel der Argumentation des Autors: Grundlage einer zivilgesellschaftlichen Konzeption von Demokratie ist ein angemessenes Verständnis von Kooperation.

It tells the story of migrant South Asian doctors who became general practitioners in the NHS.
