E. A. Seemann Henschel, Leipzig The German publisher for the visual and performing arts – for readers of all ages Leipzig is the city of Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and the Schumanns. Here, in the 15th century, the German publishing production came into being, which in the following centuries produced publishers such as Brockhaus, Reclam and E. A. Seemann. Today, the city is a vibrant metropolis in the heart of Europe that attracts artists and creative people for both education and work. Here the publishing group E. A. Seemann Henschel publishes carefully edited and attractively designed books on the visual and performing arts. The Imprint E. A. Seemann publishes elaborately produced illustrated books about the Bauhaus, Classical Modern Art, and reference books for teaching artistic techniques. The Imprint Henschel stands for illustrated text books, biographies and educational guides on dance, drama, and music. In our children's art programme BILDERBANDE (freely translated: art gang), individually illustrated books are published which impart with inspiring energy and beautiful details the colorful world of the arts to children.

A shocking glimpse into the mind of a medieval witch hunter. In 1487, the zealous Dominican inquisitor Heinrich Kramer wrote a treatise that would have a remarkable influence on European history. Blaming women for his own lust, and frustrated by official complacency before what he saw as a monstrous spiritual menace, Kramer penned a practical guide to aid law officers in the identification and prosecution of witches. Fusing theology, lurid anecdotes and advice for those engaged in combating sorcery, The Malleus Maleficarum transports the reader into the dark heart of medieval belief - where fear of the supernatural provokes a gripping struggle for understanding and control. Kramer's book led to the burning of numerous innocents and had a lasting impact on the popular image of witchcraft. It remains a sinister symbol of fanaticism and cruelty to this day.
Bringing together sources from many countries and many centuries, this study critically analyses the growth of nationalism - from medieval ethnic prejudice to the Romantic belief in a nation’s “soul”. The belief and ideology of the nation’s cultural individuality emerged from a Europe-wide exchange of ideas, often articulated in literature and belles lettres. In the last two centuries, these ideas have transformed the map of Europe and the relations between people and government. Tracing the modern European nation-state as the outcome of a cultural self-invention, cross-nationally and historically, Leerssen also provides a new approach to Europe’s contemporary identity politics. This study of nationalism offers a startling new perspective on cultural and national identity. National Thought in Europe was shortlisted for the Europe Book Prize.
