        Handbook of Phytosanitary Risk Management

        Theory and Practice

by Charles Yoe, Robert Griffin, Stephanie Bloem

Phytosanitary risk management is essential to the global economy as well as the world's ability to feed itself. This book is about understanding the fundamentals of phytosanitary risk management for trade and non-trade issues, and how to manage those risks in an effective and efficient manner that is consistent with the international regulatory framework. Its purpose is to provide the international phytosanitary community and its principal stakeholders with a strong foundation in risk management concepts and a thorough guide to best practices. Starting with the conceptual background necessary for understanding risk management, this book then covers a risk management model with a detailed description of the structure and processes necessary for best practice risk management in the global economy. This is followed by an in-depth look at the continuum of phytosanitary measures with a laser-like focus on key risk management issues, and the book concludes with a final section devoted to an examination of the most compelling risk management issues of the day. This book is: - A comprehensive exposition of phytosanitary risk management. - Valuable both to the experienced risk manager and to those getting started in the field. - Written by a team of experts with extensive professional phytosanitary work experience and knowledge of plant health. Written for professionals, practitioners and policy makers who work in the international trade of plants and plant products and allied fields, this book provides the global phytosanitary community and its principal stakeholders with a practical guide to best risk management practices.

        The factory in a garden

A history of corporate landscapes from the industrial to the digital age

by Helena Chance. Series edited by Christopher Breward

When we think about Victorian factories, 'Dark Satanic Mills' might spring to mind - images of blackened buildings and exhausted, exploited workers struggling in unhealthy and ungodly conditions. But for some employees this image was far from the truth, and this is the subject of 'The Factory in a Garden' which traces the history of a factory gardens movement from its late-eighteenth century beginnings in Britain to its twenty-first century equivalent in Google's vegetable gardens at their headquarters in California. The book is the first study of its kind examining the development of parks, gardens, and outdoor leisure facilities for factories in Britain and America as a model for the reshaping of the corporate environment in the twenty-first century. This is also the first book to give a comprehensive account of the contribution of gardens, gardening and recreation to the history of responsible capitalism and ethical working practices.

Zerstörung des moralischen Selbstbewußtseins: Chance oder Gefährdung?

Praktische Philosophie in Deutschland nach dem Nationalsozialismus

by Peter Rohs, Forum für Philosophie Bad Homburg, Siegfried Blasche, Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann, Alan Posener

Football: the game that changed the world

by Laurent Nicolet and Lev Virovets

Is it true that the first football players in Russia entertained the public between bicycle races? Why did bachelors and married men have to play against each other? Is it possible to cheat, to deceive the referee and win the world championship? What teams did the Little Mozart, Black Spider and Black Panther play for? Most people never ask such questions, while the authors of this book have not only asked them, but also found the answers. This is an exciting history of football from the very beginning till present day, for both children and adults, either long-standing fans or those trying to understand what inspires their friends and family.

        War Train

        by Donald Willerton

To Mogi Franklin, it simply seemed like a better summer job than stocking supermarket shelves in Bluff, Utah. But the opportunity to help with his sister Jennifer's architectural assessment of the newly refurbished, once-grand-and-glorious hotel and restaurant in Las Vegas, New Mexico, turned out to be much more―the kind of brain-testing mystery he loved and excelled at, along with a heavy serving of adventure and danger. The mystery was more than seventy-five years old: the robbery of a local bank by two gunmen who'd walked out the door with thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills and then simply vanished. The link with the present-day hotel suddenly appeared in an unexpected find hidden in the “ton of junk” from an unknown attic room uncovered during the building's reconstruction. There among the old clothes, books, papers, and other remnants from the early days of World War II, Mogi finds a clue, then another and then more, leading far back in the hotel's unique history. As articles in a sensationalistic local newspaper seem to tie the clues together―and lead as well to false trails and blind alleys―Mogi digs deeper into the fascinating history of the Castañeda Hotel and its storied Harvey House restaurant to unravel the untold tale linking the robbery to a mother's love for the twin sons she was never able to give enough to. A Case Study of Bt Maize in Kenya

by Edited by Angelika Hilbeck, David A. Andow

International forums have identified the need for comprehensive, transparent, scientific methods, for the pre-release testing and post-release monitoring of transgenic plants to ensure environmental safety. There is also wide recognition that the regulatory and scientific capacity for conducting these types of assessments needs to be strengthened. In response to these requirements, a GMO Guidelines Project was established - under the aegis of the International Organization for Biological Control - to develop biosafety testing guidelines for transgenic plants. This book is one of the first outputs from this project. The book aims, using the case study of Bt maize, to detail generic approaches to the evaluation of environmental impact of GM technologies. This book focuses on transgenic maize in Kenya. This maize includes genetic material derived from the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which naturally produces proteins that are toxic to some insects. The book explores both the environmental and agricultural impacts of transgenic plants. It draws out general risk assessment guidelines, and demonstrates the need for case-by-case analysis. Although focused on Kenya and Bt Maize, the book's findings and recommendations are relevant and applicable to a multitude of nations and GM crops.

Nanoformulations for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Risk Mitigation

by Zeba Khan, Nicoleta Anca Sutan

Nanotechnology research and its application in agriculture has become a major focus in recent years. Nanoformulations offer the possibility to develop more efficient and less damaging agrochemicals in the environment. Smart delivery systems for nanosensors, molecules that can help to detect biotic or abiotic stresses before they can affect production, are being developed and applied. Nanotechnology also provides new techniques for genetic manipulation and plant breeding. The use of nanoformulations in agriculture is increasingly being used to enhance food values, reduce agricultural inputs, improve nutrient contents and create a longer shelf life for many products. Nanotechnology is also being applied to many aspects of food security, disease treatment, new tools for pathogen detection, effective delivery systems and packaging materials. It is hoped that all these applications will help meet the needs of a growing population, and help mitigate the effects of climate change and other ecological disturbances. This book highlights new applications of these nanoforms in the field of agricultural science. It is written by an international team of experts from across this broad discipline. The book is essential reading for graduate students, researchers and practitioners involved in the application of nanotechnology in agriculture. Leaving Is a Return

        by A Lai

“Leaving Is a Return” is the latest collection of essays by writer A Lai. It is divided into four series. The first part is “bronze years”: the meditation and recollection of the hometown. The second part is called “ideal country of vegetation”: a unique understanding of flowers and trees and Rural Movement, in the author's pen, it is an ideal country. The third part is “dust has not fallen”: it is the author's reading notes, as well as the knowledge of literature and reading experience. The fourth part is “music and poetry”: the author's creative experience and writing process and his understanding of many years of writing career. Leaving Is a Return gives us a lot of insights in seemingly ordinary things. The author compares the layers of the mountain to the "staircase" and says "My soul will go to heaven by stepping on these ladders." The author turns his eyes to nature and whispers with the vast world. These beautiful words can let us comprehend the spiritual space of A Lai.

Risk and Safety Management in the Leisure, Events, Tourism and Sports Industries

by Mark Piekarz, Ian Jenkins, Peter Mills

The management of risk and safety is not simply a matter of trying to remove risks, but is necessary and vital to these industries. Sensible risk management is concerned with making the most of the positive opportunities or reducing the negative risks. This books shows how the absence of explicit risk practices is not necessarily an absence of risk management, and how many existing operational and strategic practices can be understood as part of a process of risk and safety management. Its main objective is to develop greater clarity in the communication of risks and the development of safety programmes, illustrating how organisations can use a single language of risk, relevant for all levels of management and areas of operation.
