Author Biography
Robert M. Perito is the director of the Center for Security Sector Governance at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He is a former State Department foreign service officer and director of the international police training program at the Department of Justice. Perito was deputy executive secretary of the White House national security staff. He taught at Princeton, American, and George Mason universities. Perito is the coauthor of Police in War: Fighting Insurgency, Terrorism, and Violent Crime and author of Where Is the Lone Ranger? America’s Search for a Stability Force and The American Experience with Police in Peace Operations. Tariq Parvez is the former director general of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency and former national coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority. He joined the Police Service of Pakistan in 1973, retiring after thirty-five years of service in 2008. In 2004, Parvez received Pakistan’s third highest civilian award, the Sitara e Imtiaz, for his work in countering terrorism. On April 1, 2013, Parvez was sworn in as home minister of the caretaker government of Punjab province, a post he will hold until an elected government takes over. He also heads the Initiative for Public Security, which seeks to mobilize civil society against extremism in Pakistan.
